Baby Fever - Knit Baby Hat

It seems like lately everybody is pregnant, recently had a baby, or is looking at starting a family in the near future. While I am nowhere near catching the baby fever that seems to be going around, I have caught the love of knitting tiny things for those adorable babies. Besides the fact that I love to knit, making my own gifts for showers is a great money saver and adds that nice touch of personalization to your gift. Anyone can go out and buy toys or clothes or diapers, but how many people hand make their presents these days? Anyway yarn is one of the cheapest things you can buy. Granted your time counts for something, but if you're like me, it's a fun hobby anyway so you're not really giving up time that you'd be using elsewhere. Plus, knitting during movies/tv shows will keep you from snacking and I know this has really helped me reduce my calorie consumption.

Back to my baby projects…

I decided to start simple and work my way up to things like toys, clothing, and blankets. Yes, I think blankets are difficult because they require so much more knitting (time-wise)-I'll get there someday though. So I started cruising the internet for easy patterns and ended up adapting one that I liked. I originally planned to make the hat striped, but decided to merely add a white flower to make it less "gothic" looking.  Not many people want a baby wearing black, black and black. I'm planning on starting matching mittens soon and am determined those will be striped.

Materials Used:
Size 6 Needles
Black Acrylic Yarn
White Acrylic Yarn
Tapestry Needle
**You can use any alternating colors**

Hat (0-3 Months or ~14")

Original pattern can be found here and many thanks to TheMuckyMacBook for an awesome pattern.
The only thing I have changed about the hat pattern was that I ribbed the first 1.5" rather than working in seed stitch. For some reason I had the worst trouble not dropping stitches with this one. On a bright note, this forced me to learn how to pick those stitches back up or at least close the hole created by dropping the stitch (will post about this later).

Flower

CO 51
K1, P1 in Stockinette Stitch for 4 rows
K1, Cast off 9 – Repeat to end (Should have 6 Stitches on Needle)
Cut yarn leaving plenty of yarn (I would probably leave close to 12" to make it easier to work with)
Thread your yarn back through your stitches using the tapestry needle and pull tight no ensure no hole in the center. Now sew up the sides to remove the gaps that are showing. When I was making my flower I believe I miscounted a few times which is why my flower is a bit lopsided.
Next using the black yarn (or whatever color you want to use) CO 2
Increase each stitch twice.

Knit 3 rows, then K2TOG twice and cut your yarn. Again leave ample yarn and thread this through your remaining stitches. Use the leftover black yarn to stitch the center of the flower through the flower and onto the hat. Weave in all ends and voila you have a cute baby hat (and it's no longer all black).

This was a really fun project and I can't wait to start on the matching mittens. I will post that as soon as I can complete them. Then I will have one complete set ready to go for the next baby shower I attend and can begin using different colors or branch out to baby booties! Whether you're making creations for your own child or just trying to keep up with everyone else's baby fever, I hope this pattern works amazingly for you as well.
